Our Care
It is a priority that residents feel happy and comfortable in their home therefore time and thought goes into the decoration of all the rooms at Thorpe House. We encourage personalisation of bedrooms with residents’ own belongings.
Thorpe House is currently comprised of a variety of rooms including:
- Companion rooms
- Single rooms
- Bedsit rooms
Each room is different, some include en-suite with toilet facilities only and some with both toilet and shower facilities. In addition, all rooms have a nurse call in both the bedroom area and in toilet facilities where applicable.
In the main home, a small and large lounge and a conservatory make up the communal sitting areas in Thorpe House. In these areas’ residents have access to an Alexa Echo Dot and multiple TV’s. The conservatory doors lead into the back garden where there is a sheltered area for residents who prefer to sit in the comfort of shade.
A therapy kitchen supports residents who wish to improve their daily living skills. After assessment by the occupational team this can be used with input and support as required by the nutritionist and nursing team.
The newly revealed barn features a communal kitchen, dining and lounge area for residents to relax and enjoy. In these areas’ residents have access to an Alexa Echo Show and multiple TV’s throughout the building.
To make it easy for residents to contact friends and family there is a pay phone, access to two iPads and free WI-FI available across the building. A designated smoking area is located outside but under cover for protection against adverse weather.
Thorpe House provides 24-hour care for adults aged over 18 years old and caters for adults over the age of 65.
The unit provides nursing care for adults with a range of mental health needs due to the diverse range of diagnoses including:
- Anxiety
- Bipolar affective disorder
- Dementia with challenging behaviours
- Depression
- Eating disorders
- Korsokoff’s syndrome
- Obsessive compulsive disorder
- Personality related issues
- Schizoaffective Disorder
- Schizophrenia
In addition to this care can be provided for adults with some physical health issues.
Thorpe House maintains excellent links with the other healthcare professionals including GP’s, Consultants and Social workers.
Registered mental health nurses are on duty 24 hours a day and are supported by our skilled care support staff.
Thorpe House takes a holistic view of the individual and works towards the residents being a partner in their care. Care plans are person centred and are based on a full set of assessments and observations from staff.
Meal times are important, and it is a priority that residents are supported to eat and drink well in order to promote their health and wellbeing. During mealtimes staff are always on hand to provide support and make meals a relaxed, enjoyable experience.
Our talented kitchen staff prepare a variety of tasty meals from a range of 16 seasonal menus. At each meal time there are at least three options available. However, one of these is classed as a ‘lighter’ option aimed at any of our residents who wish to lose weight. The kitchen team are also able to prepare meals for residents with special dietary requirements to ensure their needs are met.
Our in-house nutritionist helps residents create their own personalised meal plans for the week.
Food Safety and Hygiene is of huge importance and therefore Thorpe House currently holds a 5-star rating from their most recent inspection carried out on 22 August 2024.
Residents are supported by our in-house occupational therapists, activities co-ordinator and nursing assistants to choose how they wish to spend their time. Each day a wide range of activities are on offer to suit the needs of all residents. We regularly update our resident’s activity plan which is agreed with them and displayed around the home.

- Arts & Crafts
- Crosswords & word searches
- Walking group
- Diary planning
- Film group
- Reminiscence
Monthly meetings are held for residents to discuss the care they receive, policies, procedures and the general environment and day to day running of the home.
Set in the Village of Almondbury there are good bus links into the town centre and various shops within the village itself.
Residents are encouraged to attend external activities such as Zumba, knitting and walking groups if these hobbies and interests cannot be facilitated within the home. Where required staff can support residents to access these services.
Thorpe House has its own minibus vehicle which can be used for trips and outings such as the annual trip to Blackpool illuminations.
